THE MAKING OF AN OIL PORTRAIT

PORTRAITS become heirlooms. That is why I craft all of my work to superior standards of archival permanence and quality with an emphasis on aesthetic excellence.

PHOTOGRAPHY: The pet portraits I paint are done from the photos you send me. Send me as many as you can so I can choose the best photo for the portrait. If you have a favorite photo/pose tell me and I will let you know if it is suitable to work from. Digital images should be high resolution and may be emailed. Please contact me for directions on mailing printed photos.

LIGHTING: The photos can be taken outdoors in natural light on a bright but slightly cloudy day, or indoors near a large window with the sun behind you, avoid having the light source behind your pet. Please don't use a flash as it tends to flatten out the image. And please don't use your cell phone camera.

VIEWS: The best photos are taken on the same level as your pet instead of from above. If you can't get down on the same level as your pet put them up on something. Get as close as you can to your pet, but don't cut off their ears.

TELL ME about your companion animal. I love hearing their stories (and I want to know their name). Knowing something about their history and personality makes the photos you send "come alive" to me. I think about the stories I've been told while I'm painting. It feels like I know them.

OTHER COSTS: All materials are the responsibility of the artist. Shipping is an additional $10.

FRAMING: Frames are available for a small additional cost.
